Dialing basics
From inside the University the telephone system looks like a very large home telephone system: dial an internal number and it will work. From outside (but inside the local area Göttingen) you need to dial "39" first. If you are more far away you need to dial the area code "551" also, and prefix this one with an additiall zero.
For example one of those seminar rooms is reachable by dialing
- Inside University
- 172040
- From inside town / local area
- 39 172040
- Country wide and from mobile phones (german providers)
- 0551 39 172040
- World wide
- 0049 551 39 172040
- Note the presence/absence of the leading zero of "0551". See the Wikipedia (link below) for a formal explanation.
- Of course the spaces " " are inserted just for visual recognition and are not actually dialed
- Finally the fully qualified number usually is presented as specified in DIN5008 as
